Some developments require us to pause and rethink. The question is no longer whether we build more sustainably, but how consistently we do so. As regulatory pressure, ESG demands, and climate targets increase, the building sector must lead the way - down to every last detail, including tenant fit-out.
That’s why apoprojekt is leading the charge. Their new approach to sustainable tenant fit-out shines a light on an often-overlooked area of construction. While interiors are regularly reworked, the emissions they generate are rarely accounted for. apoprojekt’s model is changing that, with a solution that is resource-efficient, transparent, and built for the future.
Interior Fit-Outs as Key to Climate Change
In 2025, apoprojekt will officially launch a sustainable fit-out concept that proves carbon reduction doesn't mean compromise.
Through an integrated design & build approach, apoprojekt delivers fit-outs where:
- Up to 100% of CO₂ emissions can be saved
- Every decision is tracked and audited through the Sustainability Passport, verified by TÜV Süd
- ESG compliance and transparent reporting are built-in from the ground up
This isn’t theory, it’s an actionable framework to change how we build and renovate.
EDGE HafenCity Hamburg: The First Pilot Project
At EDGE HafenCity, apoprojekt brought this vision to life - transforming an office space with low-impact materials and mindful processes:
- Glass walls with wooden frames replaced aluminium.
- Straw wall modules took the place of conventional drywall.
- Flooring was made with recycled, CO₂-reduced materials.
The result? A workspace that looks and feels as high-quality as ever, but with dramatically lower emissions. Even the trades involved were retrained to meet new sustainability goals.
Not everything was smooth from the start, but that was the point. Every challenge was a learning opportunity.
What’s Next
Just floors below, a test space is pushing the concept further experimenting with:
- Straw panels, clay fillers, and loam materials
- Supplier quality and material compatibility
- Subcontractor readiness for new sustainability standards
These insights are actively shaping the next version of apoprojekt’s sustainable fit-out model.
“We are developing sustainable tenant fit-outs not just for the moment, but for the future.
Because at some point, environmental responsibility will no longer be an add-on, but a prerequisite.”
- Daniel Gerdelmann, Head of ESG & Sustainability, apoprojekt.
